I used Lucas' The Fine art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Speech communication Communication class at Baruch College. I used Lucas' The Art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Voice communication Communication class at Baruch Higher. While I wound up being very impressed with the textbook, I felt that information technology had a number of significant shortcomings and wound up preferring Engleberg and Daly's Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking course at Wagner College.

First, the strengths. Lucas's volume is the well-nigh recognizable textbook in the field for some good reasons. Lucas provides a very clear guide to public speaking, giving concrete examples of how to approach different types of speeches and how to craft and prepare for them. The text is conspicuously stated, updated to refer to current events and problems, and beautifully illustrated. For those reasons, I think the book is valuable.

But the biggest negative element is its price point. Retailing at over $100, the book is simply not affordable for many students at public universities, and request them to buy it is non ethical, specially when at that place are then many competing options which are all cheaper--some at half the cost or less. The "Connect" multimedia CD is useful but probably part of the loftier price betoken, and ultimately I don't retrieve the CD is necessary at all for students to learn finer from the book. A further negative element, in my mind, is that Lucas'southward text is singlemindedly focused on public speaking classes. I think it would be valuable to broaden the gaze of this book to hash out how the skills taught in the book tin be applied to many other situations outside of the classroom and in daily life.

The championship should really be "The amateur book of high school classroom presentations"... If you're an experienced businessperson, please don't waste your time!

The only reason why I'thousand criticizing the book is because the title is completely misleading... In no fashion, shape or grade is this remotely close to deserving its score when benchmarking to many other public speaking/ presentation books like:

- The art of public speaking (original Carnegie's version)
- Presentation zen
- How to evangelize a Ted ta

The title should really exist "The apprentice book of high schoolhouse classroom presentations"... If you're an experienced businessperson, please don't waste product your time!

The only reason why I'm criticizing the book is considering the title is completely misleading... In no way, shape or form is this remotely shut to deserving its score when benchmarking to many other public speaking/ presentation books similar:

I recommend this book to whoever wants to larn public speaking. It talks most the almost key aspects of public speaking, including ideals, purpose, organisation, vocal variety, torso language, audience analysis, and etc.

It does not talk almost "dry out theory" cloth. Each definition is followed past several vivid examples. It also has very idea provoking exercises after each chapter. Moreover, it provides several sample speeches in the multimedia that comes with the volume. Last but not lea

Moreover, it provides several sample speeches in the multimedia that comes with the volume. This book presents public speaking in an interesting writing way. The discussions in the book are topical and the example speeches do a good job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of amateur public speakers in a grade. I thought information technology did a great job of pointing out things to think almost when making a voice communication that y'all may non automatically call up nigh. I learned lessons that I will exist able to employ in argument and public speaking for a long time.

This book was required reading for one of my core classes. Overall I think that it'due south good for its intended purpose. As a preacher of the gospel who engages in public speaking every week of my life, I want to be as polished as possible. Nevertheless, we always need to exist careful not to depend on the methods more than than the message. Too many pages, super repetitive and frustrating to get through. I experience like I'm reading over the same pages in different diction. But it has useful information, just not my type of book. I simply bought information technology off of Amazon kindle for higher. Nothing special to me.

This is an excellent volume full of great suggestions for writing and giving presentations. I can imagine whatever other book about public speaking beingness insanely dry, but Lucas kept his chapters full of funny (if not completely conceivable) examples. He also includes great laundry lists of what to include in informative, persuasive, and group presentations. This book would definitely be helpful for students taking voice communication classes for the first time.

Pretty basic stuff, but does include sections that focus on certain types of speeches, so it was helpful when I was constructing some of mine. Lots of information you may find in your composition textbook, every bit it focuses a lot on constructing arguments. The general advice on calming your nerves and getting over phase fright is great, but non exactly easy to accept to eye... it's public speaking, nothing tin calm those fretfulness for the first few speeches, no thing how gently it'south written. Pretty basic stuff, just does include sections that focus on certain types of speeches, so it was helpful when I was amalgam some of mine.
